A blogging compromise
Well, as I said in the previous ‘hiccups’ post, this blogging thing is not quite as straight forward as I hoped it would be. Don’t get me wrong… I think that WordPress is a great tool and for the most part I really love how it is working. But I am disappointed in the themes.
I guess I am pretty picky about what I think is a good theme. Sure, I want it to look good; but I also want it to be written with good code practices and I want it to have full functionality… not be missing things like blog navigation or dates and categories on posts. Oh yeah, I want the html that is generated to be nice too so that the search engines can deal with it. Too much to ask? Probably not, but there are so many themes available out there that it is difficult to find one that will do all of that. Mind you, I have only been researching free themes, not the premium ones that you can pay for.
So, I am back to what I wanted to avoid. I know enough about html and css coding to write a website that will do what I want. I don’t quite have the artistic eye that some designers do but I can get things to function properly. Now I’ll have to learn a little php coding so that I can work with WordPress and write my own theme that will have all of the functionality that I want for this blog and none of the hiccups I keep finding in the premade themes. That is going to take me a little while so in the meantime I have to compromise on some of the things that I want. sigh.
Since a blog is primarily a screen thing I decided to compromise on the printing. I went back to the theme I was using. It looks good on the screen and has the right pieces and parts. I am not thrilled with the code but Google still seems to be finding me ok. However, it really messes things up when you try to print. So, if you find a post that you would like to print, please drop me a comment and I will be happy to pull together a quick pdf for you.
It’s a good thing I like to learn new stuff all the time!
